Following an impressive performance in his rematch with Liam Smith, Chris Eubank Jr has options.
The Brighton man’s career was on the ropes when he was stopped by Smith in the fourth round of their January bout, but he activated the rematch clause and overcame any demons to reverse the result.
Eubank won every round against a laboured Smith in fight two, culminating in a tenth round TKO that allowed him to call out who he fancied. Conor Benn was on that list, but so was former pound-for-pound star, Gennady Golovkin.
The hard-hitting Kazakh fighter is no longer champion in the middleweight division after vacating his belts, but Eubank still seems to want a piece.
It’s something Carl Froch – a former super-middleweight titlist – believes would be a bad move. Speaking on Froch on Fighting, ‘The Cobra’ said that even at 41 ‘GGG’ would win by knockout.
“I don’t know, what’s Triple G done in a while? He’s 41 years old … I don’t think [Eubank] does, no. Cause the last things to go is a boxer’s power, and he’s that well-schooled that even an old, past his best, reflexes gone a little bit [Golovkin] lands a shot on Eubank Jr I think it’s fight over. So no, I don’t think he beats Triple G if I’m honest.”
Golovkin has been out of the ring since a trilogy defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez up at 168lbs in September of last year. It’s unclear what he plans to do next.
As for Eubank, he’s looking more towards a fight with Benn, which would be rescheduled from their ill-fated event last October, pulled at the last minute due to a banned substance in the latter’s system.
The 26-year-old’s promotional team is confident they can secure a British license in time for December and make a stadium fight.
