A rematch between Ted Cheeseman and Sam Eggington appears unlikely at present, as ‘The Big Cheese’ is unhappy with the financial terms offered.
The two super-welterweights topped the bill on the first of Eddie Hearn’s ‘Fight Camp’ cards back in August. After a cautious opening six rounds, the fight caught fire in the second half, with both men having to weather the storm in a back and forth encounter.
Cheeseman (16-2-1, 9 KOs) ultimately prevailed by scores of 115-114 and 116-112 twice. However, the result was somewhat controversial as many believed that Eggington (28-7, 17 KOs) had done enough to get the decision in a domestic fight of the year contender.
Immediately afterwards, Eggington expressed his desire to fight the Londoner again.
“Being in there, it felt like a good fight,” Eggington told Sky Sports at the time. “I’m sure people would like to see it again, with a crowd, maybe.”
Hearn was keen to make the rematch, but so far he has been unable to reach terms with Cheeseman. Boxing Social caught up with Eggington’s trainer and manager Jon Pegg to get an update on the negotiations.
“Obviously, we are up for it,” Pegg said. “[We] got told that Ted refused it, so it’s not going to happen. [I] can understand Ted wanting more money, but Eddie has always paid well, so for Eddie to say they are miles apart, he must be looking for a lot. I suppose it’s down to how much someone wants to box, really.
“I’m not one for knocking people, but without Sam, [Ted’s] wage is going to be small, anyway. Sam made the fight what it was. We won’t hang around. We’ll do what we’ve always done and find a route.”
