Finally, after months of teasing, Chris Billam-Smith’s all-British cruiserweight world title showdown has been formally announced for what will be the WBO champion’s second defence of his crown.
‘The Gentleman’ lost out to Riakporhe back in 2019 where he was on the wrong side of a split-decision – that defeat representing the lone blemish on his 20 fight career.
However, Billam-Smith has gone from strength to strength since, putting together a run that saw him dethrone Lawrence Okolie and claim the WBO cruiserweight title last year.
Meanwhile, Riakporhe has maintained his undefeated run but has failed to reach the heights of his fellow Brit, but now he has been granted the opportunity to challenge for world honours for the first time and to do so against an opponent whom he has already beat.
The two men will meet at Selhurst Park in London on June 15, and Billam-Smith is planning on making it a memorable experience for his fans.
“I’m looking forward to giving the Bournemouth fans an away day to remember with an explosive performance, live on Sky Sports.
“Richard is a good fighter, but I’ve improved hugely since we last met and he’s going to be in for a terrible night at Selhurst Park. The WBO belt is coming back with me to Bournemouth.”
Riakporhe meanwhile has spoken of his excitement ahead of the bout, especially considering it will be staged at the home of his beloved Crystal Palace F.C.
“My time has come. The countdown is on. I’m the runaway ‘Midnight Train’ that you cannot stop and it’s the end of the line for Chris Billam-Smith. I can’t wait to knock Chris out and take his title.
“I’ve beaten him once and I’m ready to do it again. This time it’s not going to the judges. He’s going to be out cold on the canvas and the world title is going to be staying in south London.
“I’m proud to be from south London and be affiliated with a club like Crystal Palace. The support of the club and the fans means everything to me. I’m going to repay that support with a devastating performance on June 15.”
A potential fight that could join the event is Joshua Buatsi vs. Anthony Yarde, depending on ongoing issues with Yarde’s contract with Queensberry.
Regardless, Billam-Smith will take on Riakporhe in South London, in what could be the domestic clash of the year.
