Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has told Chris Eubank Jr to his face that he is ruining his career, after the former world title challenger announced his decision to leave Wasserman Boxing in favour of a move into free agency and seemingly move away from a grudge match with Conor Benn.
19 years on from the last time that a Eubank faced a Benn, Chris and Conor were set to collide in a unique trilogy contest that spans across generations, continuing on the famous rivalry of their fathers. However, a positive drugs test caused the showdown to collapse on fight week and saw Benn exiled away from British boxing, making his comeback on American soil around 12 months later.
Instead, Eubank has been linked to battles against the likes of unified world champion Janibek Alimkhanuly and arguable pound-for-pound number one Terence Crawford, although Hearn has maintained that he is open to staging the scrap with Benn in the Middle East.
Now it has been confirmed that Eubank Jr. has left promoter Kalle Sauerland in pursuit of the biggest possible fights, that will likely see Eubank fight in the United States for the first time during his 36-fight career.
In an interview with Boxing Social, Hearn couldn’t wrap his head around Eubank’s decision-making and revealed that he has told the 34-year-old that he is ‘clueless’ when they bumped into each other at the gym.
“I had a chat with him the other day in the gym and I told him ‘I don’t know what the f**k you are doing with your career, but you are clueless’. I said ‘what are you doing?’
“I said ‘you have got the Conor Benn fight, it is an absolute fortune, you don’t know what you are doing’. He posts out about Gervonta Davis, the reality is that we don’t make decisions if fights are on or off, contractually that is decided by the commission and the governing body, that’s the British Boxing Board of Control.
“They pulled the fight for Conor Benn, the fight was off, he wanted to fight when he knew about the test and when the fight was off – he asked for a million quid to keep the fight on. There is so much hypocrisy in boxing, it is a load of b*****s.
“[It cannot happen] in the U.K. but it can still happen and eventually, within a matter of time, it will be happening and that time will be soon. If I am Chris Eubank Jr., I am queueing up for that fight.”
Regardless of Eubank’s fight rumours, Crawford has instead decided to face Israil Madrimov in a bid to become a super-welterweight world champion atop one of the strongest cards of all-time.
Meanwhile, Benn has reignited his beef with Eubank, claiming that he can’t get a big fight and causing a recent back-and-forth, during which Eubank brought up the fact that his illusive dance-partner is unable to fight in the United Kingdom.
