Wasserman Promoter Kalle Sauerland has promoted Chris Eubank Jr. for almost ten years, but the pair surprisingly split from one another back in April, despite the fact that the middleweight contender was coming off of an impressive victory. Now, Sauerland has broken his silence regarding the situation.
Eubank avenged his defeat to Liam Smith the last time that he stepped into the ring, returning the favour by stopping the only man to have knocked him out and render one of Great Britain’s most intense recent domestic rivalries as a draw.
Afterwards, Eubank Jr. was linked to a number of high-profile encounters, mainly the opportunity to revisit a fight with arch-nemesis Conor Benn or against unified middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.
Instead, Sauerland advised Eubank to face relatively unknown Italian Etinosa Oliha in a bid for the less-recognised IBO world title – an idea which Eubank was quick to turn down.
Four months later, it was confirmed that Eubank and Wasserman Boxing had gone their separate ways, as the 34-year-old seeks to capitalise on his standing within British boxing and fight the biggest possible names for the most possible money.
However, in an interview with talkSPORT, Sauerland remained tight-lipped about the whole scenario, only stating that he and Eubank came to an ‘amicable agreement’ but remaining respectful and hopeful for the remainder of his former fighter’s career.
“All good things come to an end, listen it was a great 10 years, going back to the first fight which we did with him, which I think was in Denmark but really it was the World Boxing Super Series.
“I had a great time, love them, love him, love the whole team and wish them nothing but the best. We reached an amicable agreement and that is the way that boxing works, so good luck to him, we move on and we are very happy with our stable.
“It was an amicable agreement, that is all I can say.”
At present, it seems as though Eubank is set for the blockbuster card of his dreams – although he will not be headlining it. The Sussex-born 160lber is now being linked to another of his domestic rivals, as highly-rated Hamzah Sheeraz begins to emerge as a threat to the world titles, requiring a name such as Eubank’s on his résumé to take that next step into superstardom.
That potential scrap is being touted as the co-main event of the Anthony Joshua versus Daniel Dubois card which is expected to take place at Wembley Stadium on September 21st, with an announcement set to take place on June 26th in London where Turki Al-Alshikh will reveal the card in full – possibly explaining why Sauerland refused to give too much information away.
Sheeraz currently holds the position as WBC mandatory challenger after his knockout win over Ammo Williams earlier this month. This means that the victor of Eubank-Sheeraz would likely get the chance to take on reigning champion Carlos Adames for the full WBC middleweight title in the early stages of 2025.
