Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis are widely regarded as the three best lightweights in the world at present, with debate rife amongst fans over which over the American’s is the best fighter.
Their countrywoman Claressa Shields has weighed in on the debate, and has her colours firmly to the mast of one of the three.
In a recent interview with Marko Boxing, Shields strongly backed Stevenson as the one who will emerge as top dog.
“Shakur would come out on top. You can say it’s out of Shakur and Devin or out of Shakur and ‘Tank.’ Devin and Shakur are great boxers, phenomenal boxers. But ‘Tank’ is just knocking dudes out left, right and centre!”
“But let’s be honest, in his fights these guys are only landing at 6% against Shakur, whilst he’s landing at over 50%.”
“When you’re landing like that and dudes can’t hit you back? I think that Shakur’s the man.”
It remains unclear what sort of timescale fans will be see Haney, Stevenson and Davis begin to fight each other, especially given Haney’s looming move up to 140lbs, with Davis also fond of fluctuating between various different weights.
Haney is likely to face 140lb WBC champion, Regis Prograis next, whilst Davis is tipped to return at the end of the year in a rematch against Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz.
Stevenson’s next outing is likely to be against southpaw contender Frank Martin, with the WBC ordering a fight between the pair to be next, with Haney’s title to become vacant this autumn.
Though Martin is undefeated and regarded as a dark horse at 135lbs, Stevenson will go into the fight as a heavy favourite.
