It was recently announced that British welterweight star Conor Benn has been cleared of any doping charges following an investigation by the National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP). The news puts an end to a prolonged controversy that had stalled his rising boxing career. However, rather than keeping a low profile, Benn chose to stir up social media by targeting a fellow boxer.
In a surprising move, Benn took to his official account on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter) to confront the lightweight boxer, Devin Haney. In a message filled with sarcasm and provocation, Benn questioned Haney’s stance regarding his relationship with his promoter, Eddie Hearn.
“Still crying about Eddie not getting your tickets or these diddy investigations making you sweat @Realdevinhaney. I will snap you in half 💯,” Benn wrote.
So far, Devin Haney has not publicly responded to Benn’s provocations. Similarly, shortly after the NADP announcement, Benn sent a message to Ryan Garcia during an Instagram Live. Garcia is currently banned from professional fighting until April due to failing a drug test. Notably, Garcia has also been involved in an intense rivalry with Devin Haney and his father over doping tests.
On another front, Benn didn’t hold back against his most notable rival, Chris Eubank Jr. The longstanding feud between Benn and Eubank Jr. seems far from over, fueled by the rivalry between their fathers, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr., who had two iconic fights in the 1990s.
In his message to Eubank Jr., Benn was direct: “You ready Satsuma head?? @ChrisEubankJr #3rounds.”
It’s worth recalling that Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. were set to face each other in October 2022, in a fight that many anticipated would complete an epic trilogy.
However, the bout was abruptly canceled just days before it was scheduled to take place, after Benn tested positive in a doping control for clomiphene, a banned substance. This incident sparked a war of statements and legal issues with the British Boxing Board of Control, which decided to strip Benn of his license to fight in the UK.
Over the past two years, Benn has maintained his innocence, publicly confronting various British boxing entities and figures. The 27-year-old fighter not only questioned anti-doping procedures but also consistently challenged regulators in an attempt to clear his name.
Despite the setbacks, Benn returned to the ring in the United States, where he has added two unanimous decision wins against Rodolfo Orozco and Peter Dobson.
For now, we’ll have to wait to see what’s next for Conor Benn and whether the long-awaited fight with Eubank Jr. will finally happen. Likewise, there’s a chance Haney might be willing to accept Benn’s challenge and face him in the ring.
Considering the NADP’s exoneration, this opens up the possibility for Benn to finally resume his career locally. Benn’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has expressed his joy over the news, sharing his enthusiasm for the boxer’s return.
