Two-division world champion Danny Garcia is eyeing up a comeback to the sport, but has admitted that his solitary goal is to become a three-division world champion, with plans to jump back in at a new weight.
Garcia has fought just once since defeat to Errol Spence Jr in 2020, that being a majority-decision win over José Benavidez Jr. back in July 2022 on his debut at super-welterweight.
As a result, Danny Garcia is unranked at both welterweight and super-welterweight, but he has been persistent in his calls for a big fight, regardless of his inactivity and lack of ranking, demanding clashes with the likes of Conor Benn and a rematch with Keith Thurman.
However, now Garcia appears to be eyeing up belts rather than names, and he told PBC of his plans to move up once again and challenge Erislandy Lara for the WBA middleweight title, after failures to make that fight in the past.
“Boxing is all about timing, and when the time comes and then say ‘Danny Garcia, it is your time to go’, I am going.
“I wanted to fight Lara, that’s who I thought I was going to fight, that’s who I was waiting for but it didn’t work out. So hopefully tonight, if he gets the victory or if he doesn’t get the victory, I would like to fight the winner out of that fight [Lara-Zerafa]. I want to be a three-division world champion.”
Lara went on to decimate Michael Zerafa in just two rounds on Saturday night, putting the exclamation point on a second defence of his title and extending his knockout streak to three consecutive fights.
The Cuban-American remains the oldest world champion at 40-years-old, but is yet to unify world titles despite his 16-year-career, meaning he could opt to instead face Janibek Alimkhanuly in a three-belt unification bout.
