Danny Garcia did not pull any punches in his assessment of his namesake Ryan’s performance against Gervonta Davis this past weekend, claiming the 24 year old quit in the biggest fight of his life.
A seventh round body shot proved to be too much for Garcia to take, who watched on from one knee as referee Thomas Taylor counted him out at the T-Mobile Arena.
Speaking to Dynamic Duo, ‘Swift’ gave the following frank assessment.
“I thought from the beginning, the key to the fight was to do with Ryan Garcia. I always said, Gervonta just has to be Gervonta.”
“But Garcia had to be something special tonight. My question was, when it got hot, when he faced adversity, would he dig deep or would he quit? And he quit.”
“That’s what I was telling everybody. He had to dig deep, and he did the complete opposite.”
The build up to the fight caused huge excitement amongst fans across the globe, and huge numbers are expected to be generated from pay per view sales.
After an extremely quiet opening round, Garcia began the second like a man possessed, but quickly found himself on the end of a clean Davis left hand that sent him down and significant altered the course of the fight.
Though he beat the ref’s count on that occasion, it was clear Garcia was very concerned about of ‘Tank’s power from that point on and the Baltimore man began to assert his dominance over the next few rounds
Garcia regained somewhat of a foothold in the fight in the sixth round, having pockets of success that had proved rare up until that stage.
However, a sweet left to the body from Davis in the seventh brought the contest to a close.
