Popular British heavyweight Dave Allen has weighed in with his views about Deontay Wilder’s fighting future.
Wilder’s stock has fallen dramatically after a one-sided 12-round points loss to Joseph Parker not the Day of Reckoning card. It was his first real action in two years and did little to show people that he still has plenty to offer.
Speaking to Seconds Out, Allen gave credit to Parker having previously thinking he was in decline.
“I think massive credit to Joe Parker. I thought he was in decline to be honest, going off the last two years, the Joyce defeat. But Wilder, one round in two years is no good for anybody. One thing about Parker, even though I’ve not been impressed with him, he has been very active.”
He then assessed Wilder’s performance and mindset.
“One round in two years then to come back into a 12-rounder with Joseph Parker, I think he was a bit complacent. He gave away the first six rounds. He fell into the trap of believing his own power, thinking he could win the fight with one punch at any time.”
Then came the damning verdict from Allen who thinks Wilder should now retire.
“For me, that’s the end of Wilder, I think he’s done, to be honest. The post-fighting interview, the performance, millions in the bank, I think he’s finished.”
Wilder himself has given mixed signals since the end of the fight, but he is now rumoured to be on the undercard of Anthony Joshua-Francis Ngannou
