David Benavidez is one of the most talked-about boxers in the sport right now but his next fight could well be a shock to many.
It had been hoped that Benavidez may face Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in either May or September when the undisputed super middleweight champion traditionally fights. As of yet he has not confirmed his opponent but has been given an ultimatum by the PBC over it.
Last time out, Benavidez knocked out Demetrius Andrade and was the first man to do so, albeit it was the first time former world middleweight champion Andrade had fought up at that weight.
Benavidez is known for his electrifying inch output and in that last fight he managed to keep up his record in that department.
Now, it looks as though his next fight is close to being done up at light heavyweight following a message posted on X by WBC chief, Mauricio Sulaiman.
“Very proud to announce a sensational fight which the @WBCBoxing has approved to sanction for the interim Light heavyweight championship Benavidez vs Gvozdyk. Wish the best of luck for both champions.”
Oleksandr Gvozdyk has held the WBC and lineal light-heavyweight titles from 2018 to 2019 and who has lost just once in 21 fights, and that was to current champion Artur Beterbiev. As good as match-up as this would be, word is that Benevidez is still chasing Canelo.
