A ringside interview with David Benavidez on DAZN at a recent fight sparked concerns amongst onlookers and the super-middleweight star himself has now had to come out and release a statement to explain it.
Benavidez was asked how he saw the fight going between Diego Pacheco and Shawn McCalman this past weekend. It was a close contest that saw Pacheco go 10 rounds for the first time and run out points winner and though Benavidez was happy with what he saw, his speech appeared a little slurred.
He has admitted the cause of the was too much drink in a new statement posted on his Instagram and shared on X.
“I just want to take this time to apologise to all my fans and to the people that seen me last night drunk. I had one too many drinks and made a complete fool of myself smh. this will never ever happen again.”
Many fans came to his defence in the replies and claimed he should be given a day off before his next fight.
That will come up at light heavyweight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, the former WBC and lineal light-heavyweight title holder between 2018 to 2019 and a man who has lost just once in 21 fights.
This comes after Benavidez moved up following his frustrations at not being able to negotiate a fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez who fights on Cinco De May against Jamie Munguia to defend his undisputed super middleweight titles.
