Gervonta Davis has confirmed that his fight on Saturday against Rolando Romero will be his last with Mayweather Promotions.
Months of speculation has been finally made official which means after this weekend ‘Tank’ will be a highly sought-after free agent. Speaking to The Last Stand Podcast Davis explained
“I feel as it though it’s my career, so I feel as though I need to be the one that controls my career. And it’s time. Everybody don’t need training wheels on them forever. It’s time to ride their own bike without training wheels.”
“I’m definitely appreciative for what they’ve done for me over the years, it’s just time for me to grow up and be my own man.”
Davis will defend his secondary WBA lightweight title at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre on Saturday and then wants to take on Devin Haney.
Haney, the WBC champion, is in Australia preparing for his undisputed 135lb fight against George Kambosos Jr. The American recently said of Davis: ‘If you don’t care to go and make the big fights happen what’s the point of even leaving your current situation. Might as well stay there and be loyal to Floyd.’
‘Tank’ gave this response: “He’s an email champ! He’s fighting because somebody mailed him the belt. He’s talking crazy. If you win let’s make the fight happen since you want to talk crazy. Let’s do that. I want to fight you if you win, Devin Haney.”
