There is certainly no love lost between Mexican star Canelo Alvarez and former promoter Oscar De La Hoya.
Pound-for-pound No.1 Canelo split with De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions to become a free agent last year. The move has proved extremely fruitful with the Mexican picking up the WBA Super, WBC and WBO super-middleweight crowns after comprehensive wins over title-holders Callum Smith (W12) and Billy Joe Saunders (WRTD8).
But when De La Hoya took to social media to criticise Canelo on Wednesday night, suggesting the Mexican is avoiding WBC middleweight king Jermall Charlo, it’s fair to say his observations did not go down well with his former fighter.
Replying to an Instagram video where Canelo is shown teaching a young fighter, De La Hoya said: “Please, this guy does everything wrong, head up when he throws hooks, on his heels, flat-footed. What else? Oh he avoids @twincharlo.”
Master counter-puncher Canelo didn’t pull his punches in his response. “Oh really you want me to talk??? Fucking traidor [traitor]. Do me a favour and go fuck yourself [before posting some mocking and suggestive emojis].”
Charlo later added his comments, in support of Canelo, claiming De La Hoya hadn’t delivered on a promise for the fighters to meet way back in 2014.
“Listen [I don’t know] if @OscarDeLaHoya lying or not, but in 2014 he promised me or @KingGabRosado the winner get @Canelo..I won, but he ended up fighting Kirkland,” said Charlo. “@OscarDeLaHoya gotta sick again, HOW DO U GO AGAINST YOUR OWN COUNTRYMAN viva Mexico !!!”
A promotional reunion doesn’t seem likely in this lifetime.
