Promoter Frank Warren revealed WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders could step up to super middle to meet James DeGale in September after postponing two defences against Martin Murray due to injury.
The latter defence was slated for this Saturday night at London’s O2 Arena. Murray now faces late replacement Roberto Garcia, who’s on a 13-fight winning streak.
At the press conference on Wednesday in London, we asked the 66-year-old promoter whether Saunders would give Murray another shot should the St Helen’s man come through.
“I don’t know yet, we will have to see,” said the promoter.
“I’ve got to speak to the WBO, there are all sorts of complications as a result of this fight being postponed twice. We need to get this one [Murray v Garcia] out the way, then we can look at what we doing in the future,” he continued.
Billy Joe, who’s had fire lit underneath him since joining up with trainer Dominic Ingle, is expected to be back out in September. Warren has guided Saunders throughout his professional career and hinted his man could look beyond Murray when he returns to full fitness. Enter James DeGale.
“He’d have to go up and give away weight if that did happen, but we will see if it can be done,” the promoter told Boxing News, referring to a potential DeGale match-up.
“I think all of those names are in the hat. That would be a great fight. I’m sure all the fans would come out for that. All those names at the moment are there to be considered. I’ve got to sit down with Bill, which I will do over the weekend and we’ll work out what we’re going to do.”
