American professional boxer Deontay Wilder has opened up on his off-cage life. He speaks about the potentially devastating impact of a heartbreaking event on his life and career. Following a string of events in his health and personal life, Wilder took time off from the ring before marking a grand return last month.
Wilder defeated Derek Chisora on April 4 in a heavyweight clash in what many thought was Chisora’s last bout. Wilder defeated Chisora by split decision in the enthralling fight. However, Chisora reportedly consulted with his wife and has gotten the go-ahead for a rematch with Wilder.
Reports claim the British boxer has plans to retire after the rematch, which he hopes will be held before the year ends. While Wilder savors his latest victory, he is also taking time to reflect on what could have become of his career.
Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder describes “heartbreak” moment in life
Many MMA fans understand that the former WBC heavyweight champion is one of the most lethal within the ring. However, fewer people understand the tough events in his personal life, including a heartbreak that got him suicidal. Wilder opens up on this grave season during an interview with DAZNBoxing.
“Mentally I was done for. When a man loves, he loves hard…and when his heart is broken it’s a devastating thing. It’s almost like you want to k**l yourself”
Wilder broke up with internet personality Telli Swift acrimoniously following legal battles and allegations of abuse and coercive sexual demands. Both celebrities reportedly met in 2015 and began dating shortly afterward at LAX airport. He proposed to her on February 15, 2018, during their child’s gender reveal party.
However, their relationship deteriorated over several years, culminating in a highly public breakup last year. Telli accused Wilder of repeated physical abuse against her and her son. She also highlighted verbal abuse in her divorce filing, requesting a temporary restraining order against Wilder. The court granted the order, sealing an interim end to their chaotic relationship.
Following the breakup and personal health challenges, Wilder claims he battled severe mental struggles and fought suicidal thoughts. Fortunately, it appears he overcame the mental struggle and is on course to continue a remarkable boxing career.
