Deontay Wilder is back in the ring next weekend and ahead of his next fight, he has sent a big threat to his opponent Zhilei Zhang.
Wilder versus Zhang is one of the standout clashes in June’s Matchroom vs. Queensberry 5 v 5 event, and Widler has been picked as Eddie Hearn’s team captain for the event meaning that should he win, he will get an extra point in the overall competition.
This fight sees the two heavyweights both coming off losses, and both are to the same man, Joseph Parker. He beat Wilder back in December on the huge Day of Reckoning card in one of the best performances of his career. It saw him avoid big punches and box clever on his way to a 12-round points victory.
Then, on the undercard to Anthony Joshua’s win over Francis Ngannou in March, Parker did similar in his fight with Zhang, who famously twice beat Brit Joe Joyce. Although Parker was put down, he did enough in the other rounds to get another 12-round points victory.
Speaking to Matchroom Boxing, Wilder was asked about his famous punching ferocity.
“I think I can turn it up some more. Sometimes you have to bring that killer instinct outside of you. Some people are afraid to bring it out because they’re afraid of what can happen to another human being but June 1st we’re gunna bring all that.”
He then spoke about what he is looking forward to seeing from his opponent.
“I like the way he throws certain combinations, and it seems like he has a little bite on the end of his punches. I’m looking forward to matching him power for power. We know I got thunder in my arms, I’m gunna put you out for sure. We’re gunna see what he got.”
Last of all he was asked where he will be in a decade.
“10 years from here I’m smiling, happy, at peace. I can’t say where I will be cause who knows. If death finds me I will be at peace, ’cause I have done everything on earth that I wanted to do.”
A loss for either man in this fight would leave them each out in the cold and quite possibly on the verge of retirement.
