Deontay Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scot, has been speaking about what’s next for his fighter after six months since his last bout.
Wilder returned to the ring last October for the first time since his second defeat to Tyson Fury. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ made quick work of his comeback, dispatching of Robert Helenius in the first round with a trademark right hand.
All the post fight talk was about a clash with Andy Ruiz Jr, the fight having been ordered by the WBC as a final eliminator for a shot at Fury’s belt. What seemed like a formality dragged on and has now gone completely quiet.
Wilder has been linked to all the biggest names in the division, including Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk, a fourth fight against Fury and even a two fight deal with ex-UFC champion, Francis Ngannou.
Speaking to Boxing King Media, Scott wouldn’t be drawn into mentioning any specific names, but said a ‘very’ big announcement was close.
“We are about to head into pre-camp, the opponent that we’re looking at can’t be named right now, we have just a very, very big situation coming up and we’re going to be well prepared for it.”
The trainer then went on to make a bold promise to the fans about Wilder’s future.
“What I will tell you, what I will promise you is that Deontay is going to be a two-time heavyweight champion of the world.”
To recapture his WBC belt would likely mean getting the better of Fury at a fourth attempt.
All the other belts are currently held by Usyk, who has stated his desire to keep hold of his titles and fulfil his mandatory obligations, which would rule out a Wilder fight happening anytime time unless step aside deals were agreed.
