Denotay Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott has named the one fight he wants for Wilder above all others.
Wilder has been out of action since last October, when he stopped comeback opponent Robert Helenius in one round at the Barclays Centre.
Speaking to IFL TV, Scott revealed Anthony Joshua is the “only” fight he desires for his charge, describing a showdown between the two punchers as being “good for mankind.”
“That [Anthony Joshua] is the only fight I want for Deontay. If we could get Usyk, of course because he’s got the belts, but I’m very big on Deontay fighting Joshua.”
“I believe that it’s good, not just for boxing but for so many reasons. It’s a treat to society and to culture!”
“I believe Deontay fighting Anthony Joshua is the type of fight that can motivate these little kids in these inner cities that are trying to find their way.”
“I think it’d be good, not just for boxing, but for mankind. It’d be a real tragedy if this fight doesn’t happen.”
There have been rumours over the past week or so that Wilder and Joshua could be set to lock horns in Saudi Arabia this December, as part of a four man heavyweight tournament that would also feature Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk.
This came after ‘AJ’ ominously revealed on social media last week that he would not be fighting again until December, despite prior claims from promoter Eddie Hearn that he would be back out in July after he successfully defeated comeback opponent Jermaine Franklin via unanimous decision.
Despite the fact neither man currently has a belt, Wilder vs Joshua is still undoubtedly one of the biggest fights than can be made in the sport.
