The new concept of “tag team boxing” was put on display in a video circulating on social media this week, featuring none other than Derek Chisora.
‘Del Boy’ has attached himself somewhat closely to the crossover boxing scene, and has been heavily involved in the promotion of Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury, which takes place in Saudi Arabia this Sunday night.
With former Love Island star Idris Virgo also taking part, the clip shows fighter’s tagging one and other in and out of action, mirroring somewhat a similar format in professional wrestling.
The format sprung up earlier this year, when it was announced that a Misfits card would be headlined by four boxers in two teams going up against each other.
However, that event has since been cancelled and it remains unclear whether or not the idea will be revisited in the future.
As expected, the concept was lambasted by fans of traditional boxing, many of whom took to social media to air their discontent.
It is not the first novel idea put forward in the world of crossover boxing – KSI fought two men in one night in August of last year, mimicking the great George Foreman who done the same but with four foes as opposed to two.
Some, however, aired the view that having tag team match ups and other “WWE” style tropes in Misfits is a good thing for the traditional sport, as it sets a clear boundary between the two codes.
