British heavyweight veteran Derek Chisora has offered his thoughts on the recent clip of a visibly drunk Tyson Fury falling onto the pavement, despite having signed for a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
‘The Gypsy King’ suffered a first career defeat when he lost a split-decision to the tricky Ukrainian in a heavyweight classic for the undisputed title last month. However, Fury was quick to activate his rematch clause for a repeat contest, with his success in the middle rounds providing him with enough confidence that he can avenge the defeat.
As a result, Fury and Usyk have signed for a second encounter in Riyadh on December 21st, but the Briton still decided to have a well-deserved drinks with his friends last week – but clearly had a few too many.
Chisora, who fought and lost to Fury on three occasions, could not understand the criticism of his former opponent and instead congratulated Fury for being able to celebrate after such a gruelling defeat, he told iFL TV.
“There’s nothing wrong [with it], he can go out and drink. What is the problem? What the f**k, we are British! If we go out to drink and we don’t f***ing fall on our knees, that means that we are not drunk enough.
“We need to get drunk so that we can wake up, get some fish and chips and say ‘what am I doing in here?’. Well done to Tyson on celebrating his life, he is just celebrating bro, it is okay. He deserves it.”
When Fury and Usyk meet again, it will not be for the undisputed title, with the IBF expected to strip Usyk imminently and place the vacant title on the line for the upcoming all-British showdown between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois – which is set to take place at Wembley Stadium and be announced on Wednesday June 26th by Turki Al-Alshikh.
Meanwhile, Derek Chisora will be taking part in an all-British heavyweight battle himself as he looks to upset the odds and string together consecutive victories for the first time since 2019. ‘Del Boy’ will be tasked with a confidence-shot Joe Joyce – where defeat would appear to spell the end of either of their careers and a win would thrust them into a clash against another big name in the division.
That card will take place at the O2 Arena in London on July 27th and will be shown live on TNT Sports. On the undercard, fans are treated to a tantalising rematch between Dennis McCann and Ionut Baluta for the European super-bantamweight title, as well as the second professional fight of Aadam Hamed, son of Prince Naseem Hamed, who secured a first-round knockout win over Vojtech Hrdy on the Usyk-Dubois card in a high-profile debut.
Further additions are expected to be confirmed for that bill in the coming weeks, with prospects such as Moses Itauma and new Queensberry signing Brandun Lee both expected to make an appearance.
