Devin Haney Accuses Teofimo Lopez Of Demanding Staggering Purse For Fight

Devin Haney moving up in weight to challenge for Teofimo Lopez’s 140lbs world title seems like a realistic option now that the latter has confirmed the WBO that he is officially out of a very short-lived retirement.

Lopez won the belt in fantastic fashion against formerly undisputed Josh Taylor, but promptly announced he was leaving the sport at just 25 years old.

That decision was questions by the sanctioning body, who said the title would become vacant should Lopez be certain. He confirmed within the 24 timeframe that he would continue as the champion.

Meanwhile, Haney holds all the belts at lightweight one division down. He’s long spoke of a move up, and could walk straight into a fight with Lopez as per the WBO’s terms.

What may stop the fight is a disagreement over finances. Haney said on Twitter that Lopez has previously asked for $20 million to fight.

“Yo hoe ass never retired in the first place. Let’s see if you really want the smoke. I’m gonna be 140 champ regardless. You asked for 20 million last time my pops talked to you.”

Lopez promptly denied the number, and claimed that discussions had not reached that stage – although he did urge Haney to enter official negotiations.

“What? 20 Ms? I didn’t even state out the location of our fight let alone put a price on the fight. What you talking about man?! Start losing weight and we’ll figure out the rest so we can give the fight fans a DREAM that will TAKEOVER the sport of BOXING!”

Haney also has an offer on the table to face WBC super lightweight champion, Regis Prograis. Should he decide to remain at 135lbs and defend his own belts, Shakur Stevenson is waiting impatiently in the wings as mandatory challenger.
