Devin Haney was arrested in Hollywood and subsequently released on bail, reports TMZ.
The undisputed lightweight champion was said to be travelling in a car that was found to contain a semi-automatic handgun during a traffic stop.
Haney was ‘arrested and booked for felony possession of a concealed weapon’ since the car is in his name and no passenger claimed ownership of the firearm. He was subsequently released on $35,000 bail and is expected in court next month, according to the report.
The 24-year-old became undisputed in the 135 pound ranks back in June of 2022, travelling to Australia to beat unified champion, George Kambosos Jr. Haney’s first defence was the rematch, also down under, in which he won even more conclusively.
He’s fresh off a victory over three-weight world champion, Vasily Lomachenko, in Las Vegas – a win which is a career best but has been branded the wrong decision by many.
Whilst Lomachenko campaigns for what he feels is a thoroughly-deserved rematch, Haney is fielding talks with Shakur Stevenson as his next challenger.
He also has en eye on the super lightweight division, with a move up a certainty at one stage. Should he decide to do so now, he will vacate his belts at 135lbs and walk straight into a title shot.
He has an offer on the table from WBC champion, Regis Prograis, and also recently got into a public back and forth with Teofimo Lopez, who is keen on the fight despite announcing his retirement at 25-years-old straight after he won the WBO title.
