Devin Haney has an offer to step straight into a fight that would give him the chance to become a two-weight world champion at 24-years-old.
Having become undisputed with a win over George Kambosos Jr in June of 2020, and then successfully retaining those belts in a rematch before besting Vasiliy Lomachenko for a second defence, Haney has a big decision on his hands.
It’s no secret that he’s been tight at the lightweight limit, and he’s expressed a desire to become a two-division four-belt champion.
To do so he must move up to 140lbs and unify the belts – and promoter Eddie Hearn has put an offer together for him to attempt the first step.
Speaking to IFL TV, Hearn confirmed he was in discussions with Team Haney to mount a challenge for Regis Prograis’ WBC title.
“We’ve made an offer to Devin Haney to fight Regis Prograis, and talks are ongoing with Bill Haney and Devin. It’s not been non-stop meetings with them, but they’ve had an offer.
We would like to make that fight and they’ve made it clear to us that’s a fight they would like. So we’ll have to see.”
Prograis won the title against Jose Zepeda last year, and has made one defence – a split decision victory over Danielito Zorrilla in his hometown.
Haney and Prograis have both publicly expressed interest in the fight, and the WBC would likely allow their champion at lightweight to step straight in to challenge the New Orleans native.
Haney has kept his cards close to his chest following the ‘Loma’ victory, not confirming whether his days at lightweight are over.
Should he stay in his current division, there are plenty knocking at the door. A rematch with the Ukrainian is, many believe, justified, and there’s also the matter of Shakur Stevenson, who is in a mandatory position.
Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will no doubt throw his hat in the ring too for what would be a mega-money fight.
