Lightweight champion Devin Haney will make his first undisputed title defence in Melbourne, Australia on October 16 against former champion, George Kambosos Jr.
Haney, 23, outclassed the Australian in Melbourne back in June, claiming all the belts in the process, and the pair are set to run it back as per a rematch clause.
Top Rank, who will promote the fight alongside DiBella Entertainment, held a Kickoff Press Conference for the matchup. Sitting beside his father and trainer, ‘The Dream’ displayed the confidence one would expect him to.
The champion, who holds a perfect record of 28 fights and 28 victories, says that he has improved since the pair’s first scrap.
“I look to put on another great performance and show how much I’ve improved since the last fight. After the last fight we haven’t stopped working. We’ve been critiquing our performance and we’re gonna come in even better this time.”
As for Kambosos Jr, he saw no other option than to trigger the hometown rematch he negotiated before giving Haney his shot. Never short on confidence, even despite the way the first fight played out, he says he’ll lay it all on the line for one last chance.
“It’s a great division but for me, yes, I’m 29, this is do or die for me now. You will not see my – if I don’t overcome this fight – back in Australia fighting domestic guys. That’s not me. So, everything I have I’ll be putting into that ring.”
Kambosos Jr will enter the rematch as a big underdog, something that he has said throughout his career inspires him. He will get his chance to become undisputed when he meets Haney again at The Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne this October. Details about the undercard and broadcast are to follow.
