Undefeated and undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney has addressed rumours that he was hurt by fellow lightweight Gervonta Davis in sparring.
These young talents are two of the biggest stars in boxing right now. Haney’s latest win was a 12-round unanimous-decision victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko back in May – but many argue the Ukrainian should have been the one to get his hand raised.
Baltimore’s Davis, meanwhile, recently took part in a huge pay-per-view event, stopping Ryan Garcia with a body shot in front of a sell-out crowd of 20,842 people at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The host of MWorthOfGame told Haney that when Davis was on the show he admitted that Haney had “turned it on” in sparring but also that [then Haney associate] Floyd Mayweather had to grab Haney when Tank put it on him. Haney denied this.
“Nah he lied though, cause he said that he hurt me, that he almost knock me out or some shit. Yeah, that’s cap.”
As Haney is a free agent in terms of promotional outfits, he can pursue whichever fight he wants.
He has said the fight with Davis would be massive, and would surely present his biggest challenge to date, while Davis has claimed he has “cracked” both Haney and fellow lightweight Shakur Stevenson in sparring.
Now 28, ‘Tank’ is currently in jail after breaking a home detention order, but is expected to return to the ring later this year.
Following these sparring stories, what people would like to see is Haney and Davis fight proper, with no head guards, 10oz gloves on and the bright lights above.
