Bob Arum revealed this week that a date has been ‘pretty well’ set for a mouth watering undisputed clash between Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Haney is readying to put all four of his world titles on the line against the legendary Ukrainian, who will be desperate to reclaim the belts he lost to Teofimo Lopez in 2020.
The prodigious young American captured the undisputed 135lb title in Australia in summer 2022 with a comprehensive points win over George Kambosos Jr, before retaining his status later the year with an equally impressive victory in a rematch.
The hall of fame promoter told BoxingScene that, although a venue has not yet been finalised, the two elite fighters will lock horns on May 20th.
“That fight is all agreed to and everything, and the date is pretty well set – May 20th.
“Now, the issue is where it’s gonna be. Will it be in New York? Well, that’s a problem because of the Knicks and the Rangers, and Madison Square Garden is holding dates [for NBA and NHL playoff games.”
“Will it be in Las Vegas? Quite possibly. Or will it be in the Middle East, where they’re making overtures to do the fight? We’ll have an answer for you probably within 10 days. But there’s no question that the fight is on.”
Lomachenko shook off nearly a year’s worth of ring rust with a decision victory over Jamie Ortiz last October, however many observers felt the 34 year old was not at his best that night and could be a fighter on the decline.
However, ‘Loma’ is regarded as the one of the most gifted boxers of his generation and will almost certainly be the toughest test of Haney’s career to date.
