British boxer Dillian Whyte has expressed his confusion over Anthony Joshua’s recent performance against Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium. In September, Joshua was knocked down four times and ended up losing to Dubois in a fight that left many analysts and fans surprised. While some pointed to issues with his corner’s instructions, others mentioned unusual behaviors from Joshua leading up to the fight.
In an interview with talkSPORT, Whyte, who was defeated by Joshua in 2015, shared his impression. “AJ seemed to be very good or very bad, it’s never in the middle,” said Whyte. According to him, Joshua exhibited strange behaviors in the ring, which made him question the boxer’s mental state. “He seemed like he wasn’t there. It was so weird, he was jabbing and retreating. He wasn’t doing anything offensive,” he added.
When asked about his preferences for a future fight, Dillian Whyte stated that he would prefer to face Anthony Joshua again rather than Deontay Wilder.
Despite admitting his disdain for Wilder, Whyte said, “I really hate Deontay Wilder, but I have been stopped by AJ. I have never been stopped by Wilder so I’d still love to get that one back [in a rematch].”
The anticipated rematch between Joshua and Whyte was scheduled for last year. However, an “adverse” result in a drug test for Whyte canceled the bout. Despite the setbacks, Whyte remains hopeful about facing Anthony Joshua again in the future, especially now that Joshua is going through a rebuilding phase in his career following the loss to Daniel Dubois.
For his part, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, revealed the boxer’s plans to seek revenge against Dubois in February. However, some minor physical issues could delay his return to the ring. Hearn indicated that Joshua is assessing the situation cautiously, especially with the possibility of facing Tyson Fury in the future. Fury, who is preparing for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk on December 21, could be the next big opponent for Joshua, depending on the outcome of that fight.
“Anthony Joshua desperately wants revenge, but the only issue is timing,” Hearn told the BBC. He explained that for the rematch against Dubois to take place in February, training needs to start in a couple of weeks. However, he also added that Joshua might choose to wait for the outcome of the Fury and Usyk fight before deciding his next move. “If Fury wins, we could fight him in the biggest boxing match in May,” Hearn asserted, highlighting the potential appeal of a showdown between Joshua and Fury in the summer.
Meanwhile, Dillian Whyte is patiently awaiting the opportunity to face Anthony Joshua again.
