Reflecting on his knockout loss to Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte has claimed that he should have been granted more time to prove he could fight on.
Whyte’s long called for WBC title shot went down at Wembley in front of around 100,000 fans. Following a bizarre build up, ‘The Bodysnatcher’ finally had his chance against ‘The Gypsy King.’
He surprised everyone in attendance by coming out southpaw in the first round, an attempt at bamboozling the bamboozler, but after an initial tentative couple of minutes the champion began to take control.
It wasn’t Whyte’s best night at the office – as he has admitted himself – and pair that with the fact that Fury was as controlling and physical as ever, the outcome started to seem written.
An uppercut knocked Whyte down in the sixth and, although he managed to get back on his feet, the referee waved it off as he stumbled slightly into the ropes.
Looking back on the stoppage with Matchroom Boxing, Whyte still doesn’t agree with it – and reveals an injury from hitting the deck.
“I think the fight obviously got stopped too early you know, I got hit with a good shot. It’s boxing, you get hurt. I’ve been down in fights before and obviously you get back up and obviously got hit with a good shot, pushed me over … When he pushed me over I ended up f***ing twisting two ligaments in my foot.”
The heavyweight from Brixton went on to discuss the fact that the knockdown came within 10 seconds of the round ending, and he believes that he should have had the time to go back to his corner.
“The boxing board didn’t follow the rules as well because if you go down, after the bell they’re not allowed to stop the fight, they’re allowed to send you to your corner, send the doctor intervene if you beat a 10 count. They didn’t even do that they just stopped the fight you know which is a big, massive breach.”
However Whyte feels, what’s done is done. He returns to the ring this month against unbeaten Jermaine Franklin in an attempt to mount another title challenge before it’s all said and done.
