Since Turki Alalshikh got involved in boxing, a brand new concept known as ‘5v5’ has been born which involves promoters going head-to-head. Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing has today agreed to a lineup with Oscar De La Hoya’s ‘Golden Boy’ stable.
In the first installment of this concept, Hearn and his old rival, now turned pal, Frank Warren battled it out to claim bragging rights.
It was a total whitewash and embarrassment for Hearn and Matchroom – which was only made worse by Daniel Dubois demolishing Anthony Joshua in front of a record Wembley crowd.
Warren has since significantly signed a broadcast deal with DAZN, which will start in April 2025.
This will mean that future ‘5v5’s’ are easier to make as for the first time both Hearn and Warren are on the same platform.
However, there has been talk of potential contests involving other promotions such as Golden Boy, Top Rank, and Boxxer.
Just yesterday, Hearn named his 5 dream bouts for a contest against Golden Boy.
De la Hoya responded by dishing out his usual critique of Hearn and then announcing his 5 preferred bouts.
Speaking to EverythingBoxing he said “We all know Eddie has the worst record as a promoter and his fighters aren’t the cream of the crop but I’m always up for giving the fans a good night of fights under one condition: the fights will be contested in a tiny ring so nobody can run.”
Oscar said that he would like to see Vergil Ortiz-‘Boots’ Ennis, Munguia-Pacheco, Zepeda-Shakur, Duarte-Haney, and Ramirez/Barboza-Catterall.
Hearn responded on Twitter/ X, saying, “Will make this easy for you.. Boots v Ortiz – AGREED. Munguia v Pacheco, he left you for Top Rank but if you can bring him back AGREED. Shakur v Zepeda AGREED. Duarte v Haney, Devin is not officially with us but happy with fight and to discuss with him. Caterrall v Barboza/Ramirez AGREED. Clean sweep @Turki_alalshikh”
Hearn has accepted all the fights De La Hoya wanted.
It now looks like the next ‘5v5’ card will be between Matchroom and Golden Boy.
