Promoter Eddie Hearn has weighed in a potential fight between Conor Benn and Gervonta Davis, describing a meeting between the pair as a “savage fest.”
Online discussion about a clash between the two young stars emerged after they got embroiled in a back and forth on Twitter, in which the American told Benn to “get off them drugs.”
Speaking on the DAZN Boxing Show, Hearn said he would be willing to make the fight, stating that Benn wants to return to action against a high profile opponent.
“Conor Benn vs ‘Tank’ Davis is an absolute savage fest. Conor has made it clear to me and the team that he wants to go straight back into a big fight.”
“Psychologically, I would prefer for him to come back into a run out, then go back into a big fight.”
“But he’s made it clear to me, he’s said “I want Eubank, I want ‘Tank,’ I want Kell Brook, I want Pacquaio.” But we’re in the situation where it’s just a matter of waiting.”
Despite the Matchroom boss’ comments, Benn vs Davis is unlikely to be a fight that fans see in the near future. There are a host of promotional and broadcasting issues that would have to be overcome, not to mention the fact that they campaign two weight classes apart.
The Brit does seem likely to be back in the ring soon however, with Hearn stating in a recent interview that the team would be “making a move” towards getting ‘The Destroyer’s career in motion again.
There has been no official ruling from either the WBC or the British Boxing Board of Control regarding Benn’s two positive VADA tests last year, however he does not currently hold a license to box in the UK.
