Matchroom promoter, Eddie Hearn, has revealed who he believes Anthony Joshua’s will face this summer if he decides to take a fight before a December clash in Saudi Arabia.
Joshua recently announced that he would next fight at the end of the year, following a solid but not spectacular comeback against Jermaine Franklin at the beginning of the month.
However, Eddie Hearn has admitted that he would like ‘AJ’ to still fight in July, but it would depend on the terms of the December fight, likely to be against either Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury.
In an interview with iFL TV, Hearn responded to a question as to whether Whyte could be the opponent for a fight in a few months time, reigniting a domestic rivalry that spans across the amateur and professional careers of both men.
“Yes [Dillian Whyte].”
I think that it is the fight.
I want him to fight in the summer and I think it would be in his best interest for his progression under Derrick James before a fight like that [Wilder or Fury].
I would expect all the other fighters [in the tournament] to fight in the summer and I don’t think he should be the one that doesn’t, but we’ll see what happens next week.”
Whyte has been calling for a rematch ever since Joshua lost his world titles, but after such a brutal knockout when they met in 2015, his callouts have been more-or-less ignored.
However, many now feel this is a good time for the pair to meet again, with most believing that Joshua requires a tougher test before challenging the best in the division, and Whyte will feel this is the perfect opportunity to avenge his defeat against a subpar AJ.
