Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has opened up on his thoughts regarding the recently announced rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, that will shockingly take place without his official involvement.
Taylor and Serrano engaged in a modern day classic at Madison Square Garden when they went toe-to-toe in 2022, with the Irishwoman doing enough in the eyes of the judges to edge a split-decision win.
Ever since, fans have been salivating at the prospect of a second instalment in their rivalry and Hearn voiced his determination to stage the event at Croke Park, but admittedly struggled to get the deal done.
Suddenly, in a surprise announcement, it was announced that Taylor-Serrano II would take place on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson undercard, under the banner of MVP Promotions, but Hearn told Boxing Social that it was an opportunity that Taylor couldn’t refuse.
“We negotiated the whole fight, because it’s the right opportunity for Katie Taylor. It was the right offer and I want to thank DAZN for allowing us to have that sensible conversation to say ‘look, let us get the win here and then we will be back for a big fight’, but at this point in her career when we receive an offer like that, we have to consider it.
“This is a good offer, we believe that we can win the fight, let’s take it. I’m not involved from a promotional point of view, we’ll be backing her 100%, and we expect to come through.
“It [the decision to let Katie fight away from Matchroom] has got nothing to do with the main-event, it’s just an opportunity for my fighter, someone that we care about a lot, someone that deserves everything from the sport of boxing.
“Financially, this was a big opportunity and we like the fight, she wants to be in the biggest fights out there, simple as that.”
Hearn will find out if the Irish hero is victorious when Taylor-Serrano II takes place on July 20th with the undisputed super-lightweight title on the line.
