In light of the comments directed towards him from Oscar De La Hoya, Eddie Hearn has joked that he might need to get a restraining order out against the former world champion turned Golden Boy promoter.
The tension between De La Hoya and Hearn seems to be escalating, with both sides openly expressing their views of one another many times in the past.
De La Hoya’s recent warning to Devin Haney that he might struggle to come back from such a defeat at the hands of his man Ryan Garcia, coupled with his dig at Hearn’s efforts in the US boxing scene, reflects his competitive nature and the desire to maintain influence and control.
Hearn branded De La Hoya a “crazed fan” and a stalker in his reply to these comments on social media.
“Genuinely are you ok? You stalk me like a crazed fan. You had a great win on Saturday yet I consume your mind 24/7.”
Haney’s interest in a rematch with Garcia adds further fuel to the fire, especially considering their history and the opportunity for redemption.
Hearn’s involvement in Haney’s pursuit of this aligns with his own determination to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with in American boxing
Speaking to Boxing Social, he was asked about De La Hoya’s constant jibes.
“It’s weird Oscar, cause, he’s right up my arse in public. We did a head-to-head round table and he couldn’t have been nicer, loves me, wants to work with, but any picture I was in he’s commenting on. one with Vadim Kornilov and Madromiv and he was like why is Eddie Hearn involved in this fight? Cause he’s my fighter!
“It’s flattering really, it really is, because if he didn’t think I was a threat why would he even talk about me? I really don’t have any emotion towards Oscar. I think the guy was one of the greatest fighters of all-time, he’s just a bit obsessed.
“I don’t know how restraining orders work in the US but you have to start getting concerned. I was listening to the Eminem song ‘Stan’ driving up here and I started thinking I hope I haven’t got a letter when I get to the office on Monday from Stan aka my from my friend Oscar, Stan. “
Hearn famously went back and forth with his British promotional rival Frank Warren of Queensberry for many years but now the two boxing behemoths have come together.
On June 1st they will pit their stables against one another in a huge night of boxing on the Matchroom v Queensberry 5 v 5 card so maybe that’s what Hearn and De La Hoya need to do in order to settle their differences once and for all.
