News that Mike Tyson would be fighting Jake Paul has got many people talking and Eddie Hearn is someone who is unhappy with the contest and has now branded it ‘sad.’
At 58, Tyson now focuses on his various business ventures having been retried from competitive boxing for many years. While he did engage in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr, a fight with the much younger, fitter Paul is a completely different proposition.
Paul, known for transitioning from YouTube to boxing, strategically selects opponents, often targeting former UFC champions or past social media foes.
Paul recently secured a knockout victory in his latest bout however, he’s yet to encounter a fighter of the calibre and renown of Tyson. The fight is set to take place in Texas on July 20 on Netflix and speaking to Boxing Social, Hearn gave his view on the unlikely match-up.
“I’m a hardcore boxing person so for me it’s very sad. It’s a big event, you know. Great to see Netflix involved in boxing, Mike Tyson’s nearly 60, but I understand people are going to watch it. So, I think we’ll see what happens.”
He was then asked if he would ever get involved with such a fight.
“No. It’s not boxing, it’s entertainment. I get it, it’s going to do big numbers, but for me, a fight fan who probably idolised Mike Tyson growing up, to see him fight someone like Jake Paul at 57, 58 years old, it’s not for me.”
