Eddy Reynoso addresses Jaime Munguía doping controversy ahead of May 2 return in Las Vegas

Jaime Munguía is back heading into Cinco de Mayo weekend, this time with the Canelo team in his corner instead of across the ring.

The former world champion is preparing to face Armando “El Toro” Reséndiz on May 2 in Las Vegas, yet the conversation around him still includes the failed drug test that followed his unanimous decision win over Bruno Surace. Munguía’s B-sample confirmed the presence of exogenous testosterone metabolites, leaving the Canelo camp in more controversy.

His team has maintained that the result was not intentional, pointing instead to possible contamination and reaffirming his commitment to clean competition.

Now, as Munguía enters a new phase of his career under trainer Eddy Reynoso and alongside Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, Reynoso addressed the situation directly.

“Things have come out clear,” Reynoso told Boxing Social. “At the end of the day, justice always speaks.”

Reynoso emphasized that his camp has remained consistent in its approach, regardless of outside criticism.

“We’ve always been disciplined,” he said. “We’ve won titles, we’ve lost fights, but we’ve always stayed the same in how we work.”

The controversy comes at a critical time for Munguía, who is attempting to rebuild momentum after a knockout loss that reshaped how he is evaluated at the top level. Though he returned with a win in the rematch, the performance did little to quiet doubts, and the failed test added another layer of scrutiny.

Reynoso framed the situation as part of the broader reality of boxing careers, where setbacks come both inside and outside the ring.

“There are always things that can affect you,” he said. “But in the end, everything comes to light.”

He also made it clear that the focus within the camp has not shifted.

“We stay focused on what we want,” Reynoso said. “We keep working, and we’re proud of what we’ve done.”

That focus now turns to Reséndiz, a champion entering the fight with momentum after his win over Caleb Plant. The matchup represents a high-risk return for Munguía, who not only faces a dangerous opponent but does so while questions still linger outside the ring.

Still, Reynoso expressed confidence in both Munguía’s preparation and mindset heading into the fight.

“When you come from a loss like Jaime had, you have to work on everything,” he said. “Especially mentally. I believe he’s overcome it.”

At 29, Reynoso believes Munguía remains in position to reestablish himself.

“He’s strong, he’s focused, and he still has a lot to give to boxing,” Reynoso said.

The May 2 card, headlined by David Benavidez vs. Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez, will give Munguía that opportunity. But unlike previous appearances, the attention will not be limited to what happens in the ring.

For now, Reynoso is staying on message.

Discipline, focus, and letting the situation play out.

Whether that is enough to quiet the noise will depend on what Munguía shows when the bell rings in Las Vegas.

How to watch: The pay-per-view begins at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT and will be available on Prime Video, regardless of Prime membership. Fans can also purchase the event through DAZN.com and traditional cable and satellite providers.
