IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards says talks are ongoing for a unification bout with WBC king Julio Cesar Martinez.
Edwards last defended his IBF title in December 2021, dominating and dropping Jayson Mama over twelve rounds at the Coca-Cola Arena, Dubai.
Mexico’s Martinez exchanged knockdowns with McWilliams Arroyo in their November bout before a cut left Arroyo unable to continue, leading to a no-contest.
Martinez has history with the Edwards family, having shared the ring with Sunny’s brother Charlie Edwards back in 2019. Martinez hit Edwards with a body shot while he was on knee, leading to a no-contest verdict in London.
“Been told the Martinez fight is close to getting made,” Edwards said via Twitter. “I know Ed, Edd and Eddy never wanted anything to do with this fight – so I hope they don’t avoid me.
Hopeful that my adviser Daniel & Eddie Hearn can reach an agreement soon as I’m ready to go March/April. Bull vs the Matador. I’d go across the pond on Cinco de Mayo if they wanted.”
