IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis has officially filed a lawsuit against his former promotional outfit after failing to deliver on their promise to deliver him fourteen fights across a four-year deal.
‘Boots’ entered an agreement with NOW Boxing in 2019 and expected to have four fights in each of the first two years of the contract and three fights in each of the remaining two. Ennis has fought on just ten occasions in that time, and just three times since 2021.
Ennis has still found success during 2023 after securing the IBF interim title last January against Karen Chukhadzhian and defending the belt against Roiman Villa in July.
In November, the reigning champion of the division Terence Crawford was stripped of the full IBF world title which subsequently saw Ennis upgraded to world champion with the governing body, but he still remains unsatisfied by his former promoters.
Boxing Scene has now reported of Ennis’ frustration at not fighting since his win over Villa and at his inactivity as a whole since signing with NOW Boxing, which has led to the filing of a ‘three-count lawsuit.’
He claims there has a breach of contract and is henceforth seeking ‘declaratory relief to void his current agreement’ and a ‘judgement in excess of $1,000,000’.
“During the Term of the Agreement Plaintiff has been ready, willing, and able to participate in the number of bouts specified in the Agreement and has made Defendant aware of his willingness,”
As a result of the fall-out between Ennis and Now Boxing, there has been whispers that Eddie Hearn is aiming to land the American superstar’s signature for Matchroom Boxing.
Although. a clause in Ennis’ contract with Now Boxing, which gives them the right to extend his contract now that he has become a world champion, could prove to be a stumbling block.
