Errol Spence has named who he believes is the number one pound for pound fighter in boxing is.
A staple himself as a top ten fighter in the sport in the eyes of most, unified welterweight world champion currently sits at number four in the Ring magazine ratings.
In a recent feature with ESNews, Spence actually named the man who is ranked just one place behind him, undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, when the discussion of pound for pound rankings came up.
“He’s pound for pound”
“He made $200m last year – he’s definitely pound for pound. I like watching Canelo.”
“The pound for pound stuff is cool, and being hall of fame is great. But you want to get your money first, because 90% of the boxers in the hall of fame are probably broke.”
Spence and Canelo have actually been linked to a blockbuster bout over the past few years, however with three weight classes between them, not to mention a host of promotional and broadcast barriers, this seems unlikely.
Canelo puts his four world titles on the line against WBO interim belt holder John Ryder, at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara this weekend, the first time he will have fought in his native Mexico since 2011.
If, as most expect, he gets past Ryder, a second crack at WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol is expected to be pencilled in for September.
Bivol overturned the betting odds to defeat Canelo last May to keep hold of his strap at 175lbs, though is now reportedly insisting that any second meeting takes place at 168lbs for the Mexican’s undisputed crown.
