After the best part of a year out of the ring, Errol Spence Jr has finally revealed he is set to make a return to boxing and has revealed the opponent, date and location of his next fight.
Spence Jr was well regarded as one of boxing’s pound-for-pound greats for several years after beating the likes of Kell Brook, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Yordenis Ugas and Mikey Garcia.
However, last July he stepped into the ring with Terence Crawford for an undisputed welterweight bout and came unstuck against the imperious Crawford, losing by knockout in the middle rounds after being put down twice and being behind on all three judges’ scorecards.
Since then he has been linked with the likes of Conor Benn and was recently called out by Ryan Garcia, who did so in support of his coach Derrick James who has filed a lawsuit against Spence for unpaid earnings following their last fight together.
Garcia, it is said, even instructed Golden Boy to make the fight with Spence at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Now, a new post on X by boxing journalist Mike Coppinger has revealed the Spence will be back in October and will be getting a shot at a WBC world title at junior middleweight.
“Sebastian Fundora and Errol Spence Jr. have agreed to a deal for a WBC junior middleweight title fight in October in Dallas, sources told ESPN.
“PBC’s hope is to stage the Prime Video PPV event at AT&T Stadium if the finalized date fits into the Dallas Cowboys’ home schedule.”
Fundora of course sent shockwaves through the sport when he beat Tim Tzsyu, despite being a heavy underdog, though was rather helped out by the fact that Tzsyu got a bay cut that bled heavily and obstructed his vision.
Spence has posted on X that this bout with Fundora might be his, and despite being a major ticket seller in his home state, he still has plenty to prove coming off the back of the beatdown by Crawford and now working with a new trainer after his split with Derrick James.
It is already being reported that should Garcia be able to clear his name after his failed drug tests following his shock win over super-lightweight world champion Devin Haney, he might be well placed to take on the winner of this fight and pick up his first proper world title belt.
