Juan Francisco Estrada is out of his trilogy fight against Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, according to ESPN.
Their bout, scheduled for March 5 in San Diego, for the Mexican’s WBA ‘Super’ Super-Flyweight title was one to look forward to in the first quarter but Salvador Rodriguez from ESPN says the trilogy is “on hold”.
According to the report Estrada appears to have not been able to train at 100% for the fight.
Rodriguez cites “post-Covid consequences” as the reason for the postponement.
Estrada’s sole fight of 2021 was his fight of the year contender against the legendary ‘Chocolatito’.
Their 12-round thriller went the distance in Dallas with ‘El Gallo’ triumphing thanks to a split decision verdict.
The second fight came nine years after their first meeting in Los Angeles which Gonzalez won defending his light-flyweight world title.
Estrada is not in “optimal condition” for the rubber match so fans can only hope that the champion can recover quickly so this legacy fight can be rearranged.
Boxing Social reached out to the fight’s promoter Eddie Hearn for comment but received no response.
