Fantasy fights ignite passion in boxing fans like little else, particularly when the discussion is based around two top heavyweights from two different eras.
And of those cross generational heavyweight duels, Tyson Fury vs Mike Tyson is mentioned perhaps more than any other fight.
A bout between the division’s widely regarded current number one, Fury, and perhaps the biggest name ever in the sport, Tyson, would be one of unique clash of styles and size, with ‘The Gypsy King’ known as a slick mover who boxes at range, whilst ‘Iron Mike’, who would be almost a foot shorter, being a ferocious puncher who does his work on the inside.
Speaking to The Mayweather Channel, two time Tyson opponent and former undisputed heavyweight world champion, Evander Holyfield, had no hesitation in picking his former foe to come out victorious.
“Tyson – Mike Tyson!”
Holyfield shared two memorable fights with Tyson in the mid 1990s, including the controversial ‘Bite Fight’ in which he famously lost a chunk of his ear at the hands (or mouth) of Tyson.
As for current heavyweight king Fury, it remains unclear at the moment what exactly his next move is, and he has not been in the ring since his one sided beatdown of Derek Chisora in their trilogy bout at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium.
The widespread hope is that he will agree terms for an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia later this year, with Skills Challenge Entertainment intending to stage the historic contest on the same card as Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder this December.
However, as has been well proven recently, attempting to predict the WBC champion’s next move is usually a fool’s errand.
