Fabio Wardley’s team is considering its options now that the fighter is the WBO interim heavyweight champion of the world.
Wardley, 31, is one of the new generation’s breakout fighters considering he was once an unlicensed fighter boxing on low level shows, with barely an amateur background, before transitioning to the pro game, and scoring significant wins over David Adeleye, Frazier Clarke, and Joseph Parker to establish himself not just one of the best heavyweights in Britain, but the Commonwealth, too, if not the world.
With three successive finishes over Clarke, Justis Huni, and now Parker, it begs the question as what is next for the fighter.
For Wardley’s manager Mike Ofo to Sky Sports, a Battle of Britain bout against Daniel Dubois could be on the cards.
“Clearly that’s a fight that Fabio would be up for.”
Dubois, 28, has far more experience on the biggest stages with a checkered record at the top level losing to Joe Joyce and Oleksandr Usyk (twice) but beating Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and, most impressively, Anthony Joshua.
“There’s nothing like an all-British showdown for the world heavyweight title,” Ofo said of a prospective match that could, quite feasibly, land at one of England’s numerous soccer stadia.
Dubois isn’t the only fighter Ofo is eyeing, though, as both Dereck Chisora and Deontay Wilder were in the mix before those guys came together for an April showdown against one another, instead. “We were pursuing a fight with Chisora or Wilder for April 4, but they took refuge in each other’s arms and as you can see from the presser, they are acting like a loved up couple,” Ofo said of that promotion.
Now that they’re aligned, if Dubois maneuvers instead to a fight against Zhilei Zhang, it would reduce Wardley’s options even further, perhaps pushing him toward Hrygovic, or Agit Kabayel.
The only heavyweight who holds all the titles outside of the WBO that Wardley owns, is Usyk, and the Ukraine king is linked with a crossover fight against kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven. The former GLORY heavyweight champion was due to fight Joshua in February, however, on account of the tragic car accident is involved in and a subsequent delay over his return to the ring, it leaves Verhoeven looking for an alternative heavyweight. to debut against.
