Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has ruled supreme from super-welter to super-middle for a number of years now.
Plenty have called out the elite Mexican along the way, chasing a mega payday and believing they have what it takes to hand him a rare loss.
One man who has been open about his desire to fight Canelo is Demetrius Andrade, who famously got into an altercation with him after his fight with Billy Joe Saunders in 2021.
Like, Canelo, Andrade has moved through the divisions winning world titles at 154 and 160 before his move to 168 this year.
Despite following a similar timeline to Alvarez, the pair are yet to meet in the ring, and Andrade told Fight Hub TV that this is no coincidence.
“Canelo knows I can fight, man, Canelo knows what’s up. He’s been doing everything to stay away from me, from the 154lb [division] to the 160lbs and now we are here at the 168lbs. At the end of the day, I am going to fight the biggest challenge.”
“[Caleb] Plant took the challenge, Canelo didn’t want to take it, so I’m here. This is my obstacle, this is the way that it is supposed to be, cool. Canelo knows that I have the ability, the will, the drive and the athleticness to be able to beat somebody like Canelo and to beat somebody like David Benavidez.”
“Of course, it is a 50/50 fight. Every fight is a 50/50 fight, but I know what I have and I know what I can bring to the table and I know that nobody really sees somebody like me [winning], with my fighting style, versus someone like David [Benavidez], Canelo, [Jermell] Charlo.”
Andrade is expected to fight David Benavidez next as he looks to increase the pressure on Canelo to force for a showdown in the future.
