Floyd Mayweather Jr and Bill Haney have engaged in an intense back-and-forth in the wake of Devin Haney’s shock defeat to Ryan Garcia at the weekend, with his father gunning for the pound-for-pound great after Mayweather offered a helping hand.
Devin Haney and Mayweather have trained together in the past and his father and trainer, Bill, even went as far to claim that ‘The Dream’ was the reason behind Mayweather’s retirement after the American duo shared a sparring session.
However, ‘Money’ has grown closer with Ryan Garcia in recent months, going for runs with the young superstar and seemingly offering him some advice as to which opponents he should select, causing an initial delay to his fight with Devin Haney.
Yet, Garcia would eventually step through the ropes and take on his former amateur rival, scoring a career best win with three knockdowns along the way to silence his doubters and leave fans questioning as to whether Haney is the fighter that everybody thought he was.
During the aftermath, Mayweather jumped onto an Instagram live with Bill Haney and explained that he is there for his son if he needs it but the proposal was shunned, as Bill Haney insinuated that the 47-year-old legend should spend more time looking after his own kids.
Mayweather – “You needed some help with your son the other f***ing night.”
Bill Haney – “Listen, your son needed help tonight. Not the other night. Your daughter needs help tonight you fool a** earthman. My son needs me today, tomorrow and every day, so does yours.”
Mayweather – “If he needs me, I am going to be there for him.”
Bill Haney – “N***a you was just poppin’ slick and I popped back at you, you crazy fool. We don’t need you for dogs**t, we don’t need you for s**t.”
Mayweather – “Any time that I have ever talked to Devin or helped Devin, guess what? It was because of total love. Period.”
Bill Haney – “I’m 50-0 in these streets, f*** your 50-0 in that boxing s**t n***a. That s**t don’t mean nothing. I’m from the streets, do something for the streets n***a and then I’ll be cool with you and stop saying stuff.”
Despite Garcia’s victory, Devin Haney still holds the WBC super-lightweight title, as ‘King Ry’ weighed in too heavy in the build-up. As a result, Haney is expected to either face Sandor Martin or vacate the belt in favour of a move up to welterweight.
Meanwhile, Garcia’s issues at making 140lbs means that a move up to 147lbs is imminent, with plans of a showdown with IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis already on his mind.
