“For the first time in my life…” – Ilia Topuria reveals massive mindset shift before next fight

The rise of Georgian-Spanish fighter Ilia Topuria to the top is inspiring enough for UFC fans globally. However, a new twist to his story seeks to refine that inspiration. Topuria claims he underwent a massive mindset shift that potentially affects his future fights. This change surrounds the motivating factor behind his professional pursuits.

The lightweight champion, who is preparing for a UFC Freedom 250 bout against Justin Gaethje, places less value on money. Things are seemingly about to change for Topuria, who admits that cash prizes inspired his 6-year career till date. However, he insists the mental shift does no harm to his fundamental passion and dedication to sporting excellence.

Ilia Topuria rethinks motive for MMA career

During a recent interview on Serebro, a podcast from MMA journalist Joreebro, Topuria opened up on his redeveloped motivations. He partly attributes the development to Divine providence, which ensured he and his family have the stability to sponsor altruism.

“For the first time in my life, I’m going to step into the octagon where my life doesn’t depend on what happens inside there… Thank God for giving me that stability”

He, however, insists that this mindset shift won’t dampen his passion and grit in the game. Instead, he promises that the mental detour will inspire him to give his best as someone who truly enjoys the sport. Among other fighters, one person who might want to take Topuria’s confession a little seriously is Gaethje. Both fighters are on the line for the UFC White House event on June 14 in what promises to be a historic night for the game.

It’ll be interesting to see how Topuria performs in front of a 4,000-strong crowd containing mostly military personnel at the event. Outside the White House grounds, over 80,000 viewers will also gather to watch the event publicly on The Ellipse. He was the first Georgian and Spanish fighter to win a UFC championship. Now, he might be on course to extend his record as the only remaining unbeaten fighter in the promotion.
