Former WBO strawweight champion Moises Fuentes is in hospital after suffering a heavy sixth-round defeat to David Cuellar at the Grand Oasis Hotel in Cancun, Mexico, on Saturday. He will undergo emergency surgery on Sunday.
Mexico City’s Fuentes (25-7-1, 14 KOs & 1 NC) was taken from the ring on a stretcher, following a fight-ending left hook from super-flyweight Cuellar (20-0, 13 KOs) in the sixth.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman later commented on Twitter: “Moises Fuentes has been admitted to the hospital after the dramatic knockout. The boxing community unites in prayer for his recovery.”
The comebacking ex-champion was returning after a three-year absence following a fifth-round loss to Roman Gonzalez in September 2018.
The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Boxing Social are with Moises and his family today.
