Matchroom Boxing has secured a major co-promotion deal with a former world champion aiming to revitalize his career. This fighter, known for his achievements in the lightweight division, has decided to take the next step in his boxing journey by moving up in weight and joining one of the most prominent promoters in the sport today.
His debut in this new phase is scheduled for early 2025, in an event that will be announced soon.
The fighter in question is former lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr., who has signed a co-promotion agreement with Matchroom Boxing, DiBella Entertainment Inc., and Ferocious Promotions.
The former world champion has confirmed that he will move up to the 140-pound division with the goal of becoming a two-division world champion.
The Australian boxer rose to international fame in November 2021 when he defeated Teofimo Lopez in New York.
In that fight, Kambosos knocked Lopez down in the first round and captured the world titles, handing Lopez his only professional loss to date.
Kambosos later faced Devin Haney in two title unification bouts in 2022, both held in Australia.
Although he lost both fights by decision, he filled iconic venues like Marvel Stadium and Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
In July 2023, Kambosos returned to winning ways by defeating IBO champion Maxi Hughes in Oklahoma.
In May 2024, he challenged renowned Vasiliy Lomachenko in Perth, delivering a memorable event.
At 31, Kambosos aims to revitalize his career in the highly competitive 140-pound division.
He will be an interested observer in December, when his fellow Australian Liam Paro defends his IBF title against Richardson Hitchins in Puerto Rico, in an event broadcast on DAZN.
George Kambosos Jr. expressed his excitement about the tripartite co-promotion agreement with Matchroom Boxing, DiBella Entertainment Inc., and Ferocious Promotions.
“I’m excited to be aligning myself to Matchroom Boxing and to be signed in a co-promotional three-way agreement with my long-time promoter DiBella Entertainment Inc and Ferocious Promotions,” said Kambosos.
He highlighted his past achievements against Lee Selby and Teofimo Lopez under Matchroom Boxing promotions. He also officially announced his move to the 140-pound division.
“I am officially announcing that I will be moving up to the 140-pound division, and being signed to Matchroom will give me my continued success and the legacy I want to leave in the sport of boxing,” said Kambosos.
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom’s chairman, celebrated the Australian’s addition to the team:
“I’m delighted to welcome George to the team. George’s win over Teofimo ripped up the script and showed that George was a man for the big occasion, and he’s proved to be a massive draw in Australia,” said Hearn.
Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment, praised Kambosos’ fighting mentality:
“Throughout his career, George has been a warrior who never shies away from a challenge, and now he wants to test himself against the top fighters at junior welterweight”, said DiBella.
DiBella also pointed out that this partnership with Matchroom is natural, given their commitment to boxing in Australia and this division.
This announcement marks a new chapter in Kambosos’ career as he seeks to establish himself as one of the big names in today’s boxing landscape.
His entry into the 140-pound division promises exciting matchups in a talent-packed weight class, including his fellow Australian, Liam Paro.
