Conor Benn continues his search for an opponent for his next fight and now a former UK world champion has revealed that he’s been approached about fighting ‘The Destroyer.’
Benn infamously tested positive for Clomifene during the build-up to his grudge match against Chris Eubank Jr, leading to the cancellation of the contest and a prolonged spell of inactivity.
However in September, Benn made his long-awaited return across the pond where he went the distance with Rodolfo Orozco, in an underwhelming display that resulted in a unanimous-decision win.
Five months later, Benn faced Peter Dobson and went twelve rounds for the first time in his career, bagging another points victory but ultimately failing to prove that he is a world level contender.
Meanwhile, Eubank Jr moved on from the cancelled contest with Benn and instead faced Liam Smith, where the Scouser scored a sensational upset knockout win, becoming the first man to knock Eubank out.
Yet, eight months on, Eubank got his revenge with a stoppage win of his own against Smith, a defeat that the Liverpudlian accredits to a significant weight cut and an injury that he had not fully recovered from.
Speaking to iFL TV, Smith revealed that he is in talks with both Matchroom Boxing and Queensberry Promotions now that he is a promotional free agent and went on to admit that Benn’s name is one that has been mentioned to him recently.
“Am I speaking to people? Yes. Have I got a few offers on the table? Yes. Have I picked one? No.
“I am in a position where it has got to be big fights, it’s not like someone is going to offer me a 12-month contract. Is it about who [which promoter] is going to offer me names.
“Frank and George Warren have offered me names and Eddie [Hearn] and Frank [Smith] are in the middle of doing the same thing, so I will probably just see which is the best option out of them two and maybe go from there.”
“That’s probably a good conversation that I can have with both [to fight on the Wembley card in September] if it is an option. Conor [Benn] has been mentioned to me and like I have always said, I will take that fight in a heartbeat. I’d love that fight next, if there is one in-between then great.
“It got spoken about when I was in Canada, Eddie asked me if I would fight him and I said ‘of course, I would love to’.”
Benn’s ongoing dispute with the BBBofC and UKAD means that he is unlikely to return to fight on British shores any time soon, with any proposed clash with Smith likely to take place after his case has been resolved.
