Former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch has urged one British boxing legend to keep away from the sport, amid reports that his countryman could be on the verge of a return to the ring.
Kell Brook walked away from the sport on a high, dominating and stopping his career-long rival, Amir Khan, in an overdue yet augmenting night for ‘Special K’ at the Manchester Arena back in 2022.
However, ever since his announcement that he will never lace up the gloves again, the Yorkshireman has continuously been linked to a comeback, mainly being matched to controversial welterweight, Conor Benn, and flamboyant middleweight Chris Eubank Jr.
In an interview with talkSPORT, Froch explained why he believes Brook would be better served accepting his retirement and settling for what has already been a stellar career, which saw the now 37-year-old become IBF welterweight champion and make three defences.
“No, [I don’t want to see him back]. Kell Brook is fragile, he is physically and mentally fragile now. When I say mentally, he can’t have any confidence.
“I know it was a great win against Amir Khan, but with his injured cheekbones and where he is with himself in terms of his head. When you have a year out of the ring, it is too long to then come back at any kind of level, what’s he had out now? Two years?”
“It’s a shame really, because he has got his wife and kids, he has got children, [but he still struggles to fill the void left by retiring from boxing]. For me he was a great athlete, a top boxer.”
For now, Benn is instead being linked to a showdown with Gervonta Davis, although Chris Eubank Jr is seemingly left without a fight.
